I was talking to an ambitious young friend of mine the other day about business training and what makes people successful. He said his company just had a speaker come in and talk to everyone about finding their ‘one thing’. If each person could find their ‘one thing’ – the one thing that only they could do, the thing that set them apart, the thing they were passionate about – then they would find contentment and success. I suppose there is truth in finding your unique contribution, what makes your heart come alive and perhaps this speaks to the connection between your ‘doing’ and your ‘being’.
4 One thing I have desired of the Lord,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord,
And to inquire in His temple. NKJV
“One thing” in the Hebrew here is roughly translated ‘properly united.’ When we are properly united with the living God, our desires are aligned with His. Our focus becomes pleasing Him. Our hearts are captured by His love.
What if all your doing is an expression of your being? As you reflect on the fruit of your life, allow it to speak back to you about the ‘one thing’ you are anchored into, focused on, desiring. Notice what captures your energy, your imagination.
As you abide in Him, your life naturally and effortlessly produces good fruit.
