Being the Beloved

Self-rejection is the greatest enemy of the spiritual life because it contradicts the sacred voice that calls us the “Beloved.” Being the Beloved constitutes the core truth of our existence.” – Henri Nouwen
How much energy do we spend assessing ourselves, condemning ourselves, telling ourselves we’re not good enough, working to get others to validate and affirm us? Exhausted? Every effort to fill the void seems to fall short. When we’re steeped in self-rejection, we can’t get enough possessions, affirmations, food, sex, money – fill in the blank!
Resting in the truth of your being – being beloved – is a practice. It takes us away from the disturbances of circumstance, the frantic cry for performance, the drive for more…It is a discipline of the mind, the body and the spirit – disciplining your mind to hear and agree with God’s conversation about you; disciplining your body to be healthy and to rest; disciplining your spirit to be free to love, forgive and appreciate.
Beloved is the name of the son or the daughter. It is the mark of value and preciousness. It is YOU and it is ME.
Be intentional this week: meditate on your being as BELOVED.
